Welcome

My name is Rodney Cool. I started Aesthetic Life Studio in 2005, after shooting my brother's wedding. Before that photography had been a hobby of mine since high school, but I never really thought about making it a business. After my brother's wedding, that all changed. I fell in love with wedding photography. The beauty, the emotion, the challenge; everything about it.

I love and enjoy beautiful things. I believe the appreciation of beauty is part of what makes us human. I believe weddings are the most beautiful of our traditions and ceremonies. It's symbolism is profound on spiritual, religious, physical, emotional, and personal levels. It's two people, coming together, forsaking all others, including themselves, and willingly giving their lives to each other.

I want to be there to capture those moments. Aesthetic Life Studio's mission is to 'Capture the Beauty of Life'. Not just weddings, but every special moment. Whether it's the beginning of a new life, rejoicing in a new baby, the celebration of entering adulthood, or the anticipation of two lives coming together. I want to share those experiences, I want to be there to capture life.

My style is a bit different then most traditional photographers. I would describe myself as a 'Photojournalism Impressionist'. What I mean by that is I capture the moment as it's happening, however, I may at times place you in a situation or a pose, etc. For example, your engagement session will go something like this. We arrive at the location you selected for the shoot, I will place you in an area with a nice background, and just encourage you to act yourselves. As I look through the lens I may slightly pose you to get the best shot. I believe this style is a good mixture of new and old coming together.

I strive to be a master of my craft. To do so I research a lot online, I read tons of magazines and books, plus I attend at least one photography seminar a year. I buy the best equipment I can afford, and I'm not afraid to take creative and technical risks. I am also a member of PPA (Professional Photographers of America).

Julie & Kyle’s Liberty Mountain Resort Wedding at Boulder Ridge

Today’s highlight is Julie & Kyle!  Their wedding was held at Liberty Mountain Resort in Fairfield, PA.  (Otherwise known as Ski Liberty) :) at Boulder Ridge.  It was a beautiful wedding in early October.  Absolutely perfect weather!  I actually shot Julie’s aunt’s wedding in March of 2008.  Julie was me at work there, and then saw my ad on theknot.com.  Enjoy the pics!

To see more of Julie and Kyle’s wedding, check it out on my new site!  Also, if you want more info on Liberty Mountain Resort’s Boulder Ridge weddings, check the resource section on my site.  There is a link straight to their site!  Also, I was just invited to attend Liberty Mountain’s yearly open house and tasting.  I’m not sure I should say more about it, as they are still in the planning stage, but they will have it in a few months.  However, if you would like to talk to me and a Liberty Mountain representative in person, you can on Sunday! (or you can call anytime) :)  Come visit us at Hager Hall this Sunday, Jan. 17 from 11:30 - 4:00 for the 2010 Bliss Bridal Gala!

Thank you so much, Julie and Kyle, for having me shoot your wedding!  Congrats!  :)

Hager Hall Wedding Highlight

Toni and Joel were married on November 14th at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, and had their wedding reception at Hager Hall in Hagerstown, MD.  I showcase Toni & Joel’s wedding on my brand new site, so take a sneak peak here, and then go to my site to see more!  :)

This photo was taken by my assistant Karen during the guarder toss.  I love it!  :)

Thank you so much, Toni & Joel!  Your wedding was awesome!  :)  Congrats!

As I said above, this wedding was held at Hager Hall in Hagerstown, MD.  This Sunday I will be at Hager Hall again for the Bliss Bridal Gala!  Come by to see us at booth #10 between 11:30 and 4:00.  There are going to be lots of give-a-ways, and a fashion show put on by J&B Bridals!  Cost of admission is $5.00, but if you register early, you get a $1.00 discount and a gift at the door.  While there, make sure you pick up a copy of Bliss magazine.  I have several photo spreads including a ‘real wedding’ of the publisher’s nuptials.  I hope I see some of you there!

Don’t forget to check out more of Toni and Joel’s wedding on my brand new site!

Valley Mall Herald-Mail Bridal & Prom Expo Show & J&B Bridal Show

Tomorrow, January 10th, we will be at the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD for the Herald-Mail Bridal Show AND J&B Bridal’s show at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA!

Come out to visit Tim and Kenny at the Valley Mall.  They will be there to showcase my work, answer questions, and hand out my info.  It should be a great show!  There is no admission fee for this show.  You can find more info here:

Bridal & Prom Expo

At that show, they will also be handing out a very cool bridal guide, and guess who’s photo is on the front cover!  :)  I also have lots of other photos through out the guide, so make sure you pick up a copy!  :D

I will personally be at the J&B Bridal Show.  I was very honored to be asked to attend this exclusive show, which only allows a certain amount of every vendor.  J&B Bridals is the best bridal shop in the area, and they sought out only the best vendors to attend this show.  Also at the show will be Madeline Gardner!  She is the award winning designer of Mori Lee wedding gowns.  She and her models will be visiting from New York city to showcase her latest fashions!  Tickets for the show are $5.  You can find more info at:

www.jbbridalshow.com

I’m very excited about both of these shows, and I wish I were able to attend both!  These shows are a great resource for local brides looking for the right vendors for their wedding.  We hope to see you there!

On another note, have you seen the latest issue of Bliss (formally HM Bride)!  If not, you need to pick up a copy, in fact, feel free to contact me for a free issue.  I have several spreads including a ‘real wedding’ spread of Kate and Scott’s May wedding at Stone Manor Country Club in Middletown, MD, and I was asked to shoot in the bridal fashion section.  It’s an awesome issue that really showcases my work.  I hope to have a post soon to show some of the spreads.  You will find some of the photos from that bridal fashion shoot on my brand spank’n new site in the ‘Portraits and Freelance’ section under ‘Bridal Fashions’.  Check out the new site at:

www.alifestudio.com (choose ‘The Site’)

I just want to thank, Kate, the publisher, for such an amazing opportunity to shoot for the magazine, and for allowing me to shoot her wedding.  Thank you, Kate!  You have no idea how appreciative I am!

Kate and Kennedy’s Harrisburg, PA Wedding

It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to make a real post, but get ready for what I hope to be daily posts over the next several weeks!  I have tons of weddings, engagement sessions, senior sessions, etc to blog.  Kate and Kennedy’s wedding will be my first.  As I have announced on my Facebook page, I am totally remaking my web site, and Kate and Kennedy just happen to be the current wedding I’m working on for the new site.  :)

Speaking of the new site.  This thing is going to rock!  There is nothing like it in the area (that I know of), and it will be way more than just an online gallery of my work.  The launch goal is mid January, so needless to say, it’s a high priority right now.  :)  Keep checking back, or better yet, fan us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for the most up-to-date news.

Kate and Kennedy were married on November 7th at the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Harrisburg, PA and had their reception at the Sheraton Four Point Hotel in Harrisburg, PA.  It was a beautiful Catholic ceremony and a very fun reception.  Kate planned the day out perfectly, leaving us plenty of time to go to Riverfront Park and the Sunken Garden in Harrisburg, so they got tons of photos of the two of them together.

Keep a look out for the new site coming in a few weeks, it’s going to have loads more of Kate and Kennedy’s wedding images!  Congratulations, Kate and Kennedy!  It was an awesome day!

Family Photo Event Pricing Available!

We have just released our pricing for this event!  Super low prices, even lower than a certain chain that is located in many malls.  :)  For example:  25 Christmas/Holiday Cards Their price: $34.95.  Our price: $24.99!!! We worked very hard to figure out the cheapest possible price, while still offering you professional quality prints!  To see more prices and to booked your session online, click on the link below:

Holiday Family Event Pricing!

Our reason for such low prices is that we wanted to be able to bless new and current clients with a very inexpensive, and very quick way to get their Christmas/Holiday shopping done.  I’ve been jokingly calling this McDonald’s photography.  :)  As McDonald’s offers fast, tasty food (admit it, it’s good) :), with great service, and cheap prices; we are offering good, quality, photos, with awesome service, cheap prices, and a super fast turnaround.  While we are a higher end wedding photography studio, we still understand there is a need for this kind of service, and there is no greater need than this time of year.  I hope you can all take advantage of this awesome event.  Feel free to purchase your time online, and then contact us for your appointment, (we are unable to make appointments online at this time) we have a limited number of slots available!

Weekly Update 10/10/09

This has been one busy week.  Actually, it’s been a busy several weeks, hence the lack of blog posts.  :)  I had an engagement session with Anita and Scott on Sunday, met with a potential client on Monday, finished a ton of photo work, & booked a new client on Thursday, welcome Jess & Chad!  2010 is booking super fast!  If you’re getting married next year and are interested in our photography, I suggest calling or emailing me as soon as you can!  Plus today is Kate and Logan’s wedding!  Congrats guys!  :)

On Wednesday I got a new camera.  The Nikon D700!  This camera rocks all get out!  Last year, Ken Rockwell, a guy a lot of us pros look to for reviews, called it the best SLR camera available.  I’m not going to bore you with stats, but it’s awesome!  I can shoot at 1600 ISO with ZERO grain!  That is AMAZING!  Sorry, that’s the geek coming out in me.  Oh, and it’s full-frame, with the option to shoot in a DX crop format!  Plus, it can shoot all the way up to an ISO of 25,600!  Yes, 25,600!  I can basically shoot in the dark with no flash!  Sorry again.  The geek thing is hard to keep under control.  :)

Wednesday also marked my one year anniversary of being a full-time photographer!  I believe I mentioned this in a previous post, but, for me, it’s worth retelling.  :)  Last year I was working a full-time job at JP Morgan Chase as a program analyst.  It was a good job with great benefits.  I mainly worked at home running reports for the collection side of the credit card division.  Even though I was at home, though, I was working all the time.  Some weeks, if not most weeks, 60 hours plus, and then I had my full-time business.  In August of last year, I found myself praying: ‘God, one of these things has to go, either my job, or my business, because I don’t have time for both.’  Well, my prayers where answered, and on the morning of Oct 7, 2008 I was asked to come into the HR office.  God had chosen the scariest option, and my steady paychecks and awesome benefits were being eliminated.  While I was being told my job was ‘terminated’, all I could think was, ‘Wow, I have an awesome opportunity to do what I love for a living.  Not everyone gets this change.’  While I was a little nervous about it, I was even more excited.  So, on the drive home, I called my wife to tell her the news, and went home to tell her of my plan.  She was so awesome and supportive, that she didn’t even question it.  The next day I started working for me.  I never took a break to regroup, or to have ‘time for myself’.  I had a wedding quota to make, and didn’t have time for breaks.  I found very quickly, there is no such thing as vacation or break when you work for yourself.  It’s amazing how the biggest jerk of a boss you can ever have is yourself.  :)

That day changed my life, and while I miss the steady checks, and the awesome health care benefits, I wouldn’t change it for anything.  I believe God answered my prayers, and He has been providing ever since.  I no longer have a job, and I’ve never been unemployed.  I feel this is my calling, and what I am meant to do.  Through Aesthetic Life Studio I can provide people with captured memories and, hopefully, bring a little beauty into their lives.  Just this past month I was able to help two brides in very unfortunate situations.  The first bride had her photographer back out on her at the last minute.  I got a call from Liberty Mountain asking if I was available for her day, and by some miracle I was.  :)  This bride was having a super stressfull week with a death in the grooms family and traveling to Maine for the funeral just a week before their wedding.  Because I have been given this gift of my business and photography I was able to help her out, and boy did I help her out.  I really hooked her up.  :)  The second bride’s story really breaks my heart.  I shot her wedding in the beginning of September, and last week she contacted me, telling me her father had unexpectedly passed away.  I had just uploaded her wedding photos a few days before, and was just about to get her DVD and reference guide out to her.  Once again, because of what I do, I was able to provide a little comfort to her and her family with images of her dad that where taken on one of the best days of his life.  I didn’t speak to him much that day, but I could tell he loved his daughter and his family.  I was able to capture moments of the bride and her dad together.  Some of the looks he gave his girl during the father/daughter dance are priceless, and I know the bride and her family will cherish them forever.

This is why I do what I do.  This business is more about people than photography to me.  I believe in investing in people, and that investing in people has a much larger return than any monetary investment could provide, and that that return not only benefits me, but everyone involved.
